Hiring an HVAC Contractor? 3 Key Qualifications

Hiring an HVAC contractor with the right qualifications makes a huge difference in your peace of mind and the quality of the work. If you need a tune-up, repair or installation performed, make sure you hire a contractor that is licensed, bonded and insured.

Licensing

Obtaining a trade-specific license requires an HVAC contractor to be knowledgeable in the field. Often a contractor must complete a minimum number of apprentice hours, pass a standardized test, and complete continuing education courses to obtain and renew the license.

Hiring an HVAC contractor with the proper trade license puts your mind at ease since you know they are qualified to perform this type of work. Licensing helps ensure the work isn’t slowed down and gives you access to a compensation fund that help right any wrongs done by a licensed contractor.

Bonding

To be bonded means an HVAC contractor has gone through a third party to obtain a surety bond. This protects you from liability if the contractor completes a job improperly or fails to meet various financial obligations, such as paying for permits or paying technicians for their time.

If you are subject to unsatisfactory work, you should contact the surety company directly. If you can prove the job was incomplete or that the contractor left you to cover their financial obligations, you may receive recompense.

Insurance

If a contractor is licensed, you can be fairly certain they are also insured, since providing proof of insurance is one step to becoming licensed. Contractors should have two types of insurance coverage to remove liability from the homeowner:

  • Liability insurance covers worker’s injuries or property damage that may occur during the job.
  • Workers’ compensation covers the cost of injured workers’ medical bills and paid leave. In the event of death, it also benefits the workers’ families.

To verify that the contractor you choose has these three key qualifications, ask for their trade license number, bond number and certification, and proof of insurance. Contact Brennan’s Heating & Air today to work with a contractor that has all the necessary qualifications.
