How to Replace the Batteries in Your Thermostat In Less Than Ten Minutes

As fall approaches, time nears to replace the batteries in your thermostat. Before you switch the A/C over to heat mode, it’s a good idea to ensure proper round-year operation of your heating and cooling system by simply knowing how to replace the batteries in a thermostat.

Not all thermostats require battery replacement, however. Some are either connected to the HVAC system’s power supply or the home’s electrical supply. If you’re not sure about your particular thermostat, you should check with the manufacturer or an HVAC contractor before you begin maintenance.

By replacing the batteries in your thermostat before winter finally arrives, you can guarantee that the thermostat will operate at full functionality all winter long.

Replacing Batteries in 3 Steps

Some thermostat models will vary, but the following steps should apply to most types:

  1. Carefully take the thermostat box off the wall by sliding it up or to one side. Once it’s off, slide the battery cover off the back side, set it aside and remove the batteries.
  2. Note the orientation of the old batteries and replace with new batteries.
  3. Slide the battery cover back on and carefully slide the thermostat back onto the wall.

How Often Should I Change the Batteries?

Most thermostats have a battery indicator, which will let you know when they’re running low. However, to keep the thermostat at peak performance, replace the batteries once per year.
