4 Ways to Save Energy This Spring
As warm weather arrives in Springfield, Virginia, keeping your home comfortable without wasting energy can prove challenging. This spring, keep cool at home and save energy with these four tips.
Install a Programmable Thermostat
If you don’t already have a programmable or smart thermostat, this is the ideal time to get one. Not only do these devices help you save energy, but they also do so automatically. For the spring season, create a basic weekly program that takes your work, school, and sleeping schedules into account. Set your thermostat to 78 degrees when you plan to be home and awake, and set it about 10 degrees higher when you’ll be out for the day or when you’re asleep at night.
Take Advantage of Window Treatments
Sun coming through your windows can increase your utility bills. When you install window coverings, be sure to opt for blinds or energy-efficient window treatments. These coverings will allow you to soak up the natural light while reducing heat gain and decreasing your need for added air conditioner usage.
Keep curtains closed to minimize the effect of the sun coming through your windows. Angle blinds to block the sun in the opposite direction instead of allowing the rays into your home. Small actions like this can significantly help to reduce heat gain.
Rely on Ceiling Fans
If you are concerned about overusing your air conditioner when temperatures rise, rely on ceiling fans instead. These devices are ideal for helping to circulate cool, conditioned air throughout the room. This helps you to avoid lowering the thermostat so you save energy. Operate your ceiling fans in a counterclockwise direction in the spring and summer to push cool air downward.
Schedule Preventive Maintenance
HVAC systems lose efficiency over time, which leads to wasted energy and high utility bills. Fortunately, preventive maintenance can help you keep both energy usage and costs under control. Schedule maintenance twice a year to help your HVAC system last longer and perform more efficiently.
