Are These Common A/C Problems Affecting Your Home Cooling?
Much like your car, your air conditioner needs regular maintenance to keep it operating efficiently and to prevent inconvenient breakdowns and expensive repair bills. An annual tuneup by a qualified technician from a reputable HVAC company will extend the life of your system, help ensure it operates efficiently for the duration of the cooling season, and prevent these common A/C problems.
Frozen Evaporator Coil
The evaporator coil in the indoor unit absorbs heat from the air that flows over it. If the coil freezes over, you likely have a refrigerant leak or an airflow obstruction. Turn off the system to allow the coil to thaw, and check for airflow obstructions:
- Inspect the supply and return registers.
- Inspect ductwork for damage.
- Inspect the air filter and replace it if it’s dirty.
If no obstructions are present, schedule a visit with a professional to check for refrigerant leaks.
Clogged Condensate Drain
When the humidity is high, condensation drips from the evaporator coil and collects in the condensate pan below. If the pan’s drain or the connected drain tubing becomes obstructed with debris, the pan will overflow and your system will shut down. Remove the water from the pan, and inspect it and the drain tubing for obstructions. Flush the drain with a gallon of water mixed with a cup of vinegar to help prevent future obstructions.
Electric Control Problems
With constant use, the connections in your air conditioner can loosen, corrosion can damage the wiring and terminals, and controls can wear out, resulting in the failure of the electric control for the fan, compressor and other essential components. Preventive maintenance is essential for preventing electric control failure.
Dirty Air Filter
A dirty filter can cause airflow problems that result in overheating and related damage, as well as allow dust to build up inside the system, potentially causing the premature failure of essential components. Check the air filter every month and swap it out for a clean one when it’s dirty.
