Common Thermostat Issues That Make Your Home Uncomfortable

Do you feel that your Fairfax, Virginia, home is abnormally uncomfortable and can’t figure out why? If your home is uncomfortable, you might feel that something is wrong with the HVAC system. But it’s possible that it’s the thermostat that’s having issues. Read on to learn what kind of thermostat issues can make your home feel too hot or too cold.

Wrong Placement

The thermostat reads the air temperature that surrounds it. During the summer, if the thermostat is too close to the air vents where cold air comes into the house, it’ll "think" that the house is cooler than it is and will shut off. As a result, it’ll make the house feel too warm.

In the winter, if the thermostat sits in direct sunlight or too close to a heat source, it’ll "think" the room is too warm and will shut off before the house is properly heated. Ideally, place the thermostat in a central location away from vents and windows.

Old and Needs Upgrading

If you have an older model, think about getting a new thermostat. If your current thermostat is unresponsive or not adjusting to its temperature setting, give us a call so we can upgrade your thermostat. A programmable or smart thermostat is an excellent upgrade for your HVAC system.

Batteries are Bad

While this may seem like a simple fix, checking the batteries and their contact points is an often overlooked step. Open the faceplate of the thermostat, insert new batteries and see if that resolves the issue. Make sure the contact points for the batteries are free of dust or dirt. Re-install the batteries and see if the thermostat works properly again.

Our knowledgeable team of experts at Brennan’s Heating & Air Conditioning can help you solve any thermostat issues you may experience. Call 703-783-0145 to schedule an appointment to have your HVAC system maintained or a smart thermostat installed.
