How We Clean Your AC Ducts

The Benefits of Duct Cleaning

Having your AC ducts cleaned in Arlington, VA when they are dirty is the smart way to keep your indoor air quality healthy and to reap the financial rewards of energy savings. In an average sized home, up to 40 pounds of dust is created on an annual basis. Your HVAC system takes in this air and breathes it back out into your home. Contaminants like chemicals and dander are also re-circulated five times a day on average. This re-circulation is what builds up contaminants in the ducts. When AC ducts are cleaned by a professional, the contaminants are removed. In addition, dirty ducts waste up to 40 percent of the energy used by an HVAC system. When an HVAC system is cleaned, it doesn’t have to work as hard to keep the temperatures you want. The end result is improved cost-effectiveness and comfort.

The Process and Equipment for Duct Cleaning

To clean AC ducts, we use a wide variety of approved NADCA equipment like access tools, inspection tools, hand-cleaning tools, vacuum collection devices, compressed air sources, HEPA vacuums and wet vacuums. Our technicians use access tools to create entry points into the HVAC system. The access points range from large entry panels for bulky equipment to small holes for optical imaging. Visual inspection tools are used to evaluate the build-up of contamination and debris within the duct system. Direct-view periscopes and closed circuit television camera systems are often used. The visual inspection tools also help in monitoring the cleaning process and evaluating the success of the methods being used.

Hand-cleaning tools used by our technicians include pneumatic agitation devices and simple brushes. Often, accumulated debris is loosened by both manual brushing and power brushing. Pneumatic devices like air whips, air skippers and blowguns are used to drive the agitated debris into the collection device. The vacuum collection devices are used to create negative pressure in the system. This controls the spread of debris during the duct cleaning process. Depending on the job, we may use portable units or units mounted on trucks. Air compressors are used in order to supply the amount of pressure required to do the cleaning.
