Should You Worry About Snow on Your Heat Pump?

Heat pumps are built to withstand all types of weather, but heavy snowstorms in Northern Virginia can test their limits. A light dusting of the white stuff isn’t a cause for worry. An outdoor unit covered with snow is something else altogether. A single snowdrift can push the equipment to its breaking point. Fortunately, there are ways to take care of your system and handle snow on your heat pump to ensure that your family stays comfortable and cozy in your Woodbridge, Virginia, home.

Let It Breathe

Whether it’s a cooling-only model or one that also provides home heating, all heat pumps rely on adequate airflow. They work by extracting heat from the air and moving it to a new location. The critical components housed in the outdoor unit can sustain damage when airflow is impeded. Those that continue to operate can send monthly energy bills through your snow-covered roof. Take precautions, however, when cleaning up after a snowfall:

  • Avoid bending the metal fins that allow air to enter and exit the outdoor unit.
  • When shoveling, take care that you don’t push snow and ice into the unit.
  • Remove any snowdrifts, vegetation or debris that is within two feet of the equipment.

Don’t forget to remove icicles too, particularly those hanging from eaves and trees. Aim for a 5-foot clearance above the top of the unit.

Schedule Proactive Maintenance

The best way to prepare your heat pump for snow is to get a tuneup before freezing weather arrives. A qualified technician will perform necessary tests, checks and calibrations to ensure the equipment runs at peak efficiency. At Brennan’s Heating and Air Conditioning, our preventive maintenance plans offer long-term savings too. For every year that you renew your maintenance agreement, you’ll earn $50 towards an HVAC system replacement.
