Your Step-by-Step Guide for Filter Changes

Find Your HVAC Filter

Your HVAC filter is usually on the blower compartment or return air duct. Horizontal HVAC units have the return duct on the side of the air handler, while vertical air handlers will have the air duct coming down into the top of the unit. Look for the air filter above, below, or behind your HVAC unit. In some homes, you may also find filters behind the return grills.

If you need help finding the filter for your HVAC unit, just ask your service technician during your next maintenance visit. You should have your system tuned up at least once a year. This is the perfect time to get a quick tutorial on locating and changing the filter.

Choose the Right Replacement

Your current air filter will provide you with a good template for purchasing replacement filters. Make sure you choose a new filter with the exact same dimensions as the old one so that you get the right fit. The MERV rating is an important consideration for your filter as well.

If you want improved filtration, you can choose a filter with a slightly higher MERV rating. However, you shouldn’t go too high, as the finer mesh of a highly-rated filter will put extra strain on your system as it tries to pull air through. Most residential systems do well with a MERV rating between 7 and 12.

Install the Filter Correctly

Sliding a new filter into your HVAC system is quick and easy. Look for directional arrows or other instructions on your filter to help you get the placement right. Some are colored separately on the front and back for proper air flow.
