5 Tips for Cooling a Room Without Turning Down the Air Conditioner
Are you trying to save money in your home in Fairfax, Virginia, this summer? Here are five tips for cooling a room without turning down the air conditioner.
Turn On the Ceiling Fan
Ceiling fans are perfect for helping circulate conditioned air and creating a windchill effect that makes the room feel cooler. The key to using ceiling fans properly is to only turn them on when you’re in the room. Set the fan to rotate counterclockwise during the summer.
Use Exhaust Fans
If your home has ventilators or exhaust fans in the laundry room, kitchen or bathroom, use them. For instance, a ventilator hood over the stove helps pull away steam created from cooking, removing it from the house and helping the indoor air stay cool.
Close the Curtains
It’s nice to enjoy sunny days. But keeping your curtains open causes your home to heat up, making your air conditioner work extra hard to keep up. Closing the blinds or using blackout curtains will help keep the house cool throughout the day. After dark, you might be able to strategically open the windows to let in some fresh air. Just be wary of any allergens you could be letting inside.
Switch to Energy-Efficient Light Bulbs
If you’re still using incandescent light bulbs, your home is producing more heat than necessary. Energy-efficient LED bulbs produce less heat. That not only makes your home feel cooler but also translates to noticeable savings on your energy bill.
Create a Cross Breeze
If you’d rather not run your AC at its maximum setting, invest in a few portable fans. Setting them up properly can create a nice cross breeze right where you need it.
