What Temperature Should my Thermostat be Set At?
The setting of your thermostat can save you a great deal of money on your heating and cooling bill. There is so much speculation and advice on the perfect temperature setting to get the most out of your HVAC system without sacrificing the comfort of your family. This set temperature will vary depending on the time of year.
Thermostat Settings During the Warmer Months
During the hot summer months, your electricity bill typically will be the highest due to the excessive use of your air conditioner unit. Believe it or not, you can keep your home cool and save money at the same time. One of the first things that you have to stop doing is wasting energy keeping your home cool when no one is around to enjoy it. Consider these settings during the summertime:
- When you’re not home, set your thermostat to 85 degrees Fahrenheit or off if you plan on being away from home for an extended period of time.
- Set your thermostat no lower than 78 degrees Fahrenheit when you are home.
Thermostat Settings During the Cooler Months
By lowering your temperature regulator 10 to 15 degrees Fahrenheit for at least eight hours daily during the winter time, you can save up to 15 percent a year on your heating bill. The longer you keep your temperature lower, the more you will save on your heating bill. Set your thermostat to:
- 68 degrees Fahrenheit when you’re home
- 55 degrees Fahrenheit or lower when you’re not home or sleeping
If you haven’t already done so, consider installing a programmable thermostat in your home. It will help you get a jump start on your savings. These programmable temperature regulators can be set according to your schedule. They are also more accurate than manual regulators because the modern technology provides control that is much more precise.
