Why Does My Heat Pump Freeze Up in Woodbridge, VA?

In Woodbridge, VA, having your heat pump freeze during the fall can make it cold and uncomfortable in your home. The average low temperature is in the low-to-mid-30s, so you want to make sure your heat pump is in good working order. Read further to find out some reasons your heat pump could freeze.

Bad Airflow

When your heat pump’s airflow is poor, it results in lower-than-normal pressure within the system. The lower pressure can cause condensation that could freeze on the coils because of the refrigerant.

Coils Are Dirty

When there’s dirt on the coils for any reason, it can exacerbate the freezing problem. The dirt can hold extra condensation, which then forms more ice than if the coils were clean.

Refrigerant is Low

Low refrigerant levels usually result from a leak. When there’s a low level of refrigerant, it causes a reduction in pressure inside the coils that has the same effect as low air pressure inside the heat pump itself.

Finding a leak is a painstaking job for one of our professional service technicians. Fortunately, we can provide fast and safe heat pump repairs.

Covered Return Vent

Many people cover the return vent accidentally. They put something in front of or over the top of it, which causes a reduction in the heat pump’s internal pressure. That can cause ice to form in the same way as any other pressure reduction.
