Do I Have to Worry About Allergies in Winter?
Winter allergies are a common problem in Manassas, Virginia. Learn more about the most common cold-weather allergens and what you can do to keep them under control. Taking preventive action can help your family breathe easier this season.
Causes of Winter Allergies
Though you may think of winter as a dormant season for allergens, this isn’t the case. Many irritants persist into the winter months and may even become worse during this time of the year. Some allergens that you might encounter include:
- Dust mites stirred up as you get out holiday decorations.
- Pet dander made worse by dry skin in winter.
- Insect droppings from bugs seeking warmth indoors.
The best way to control these allergens is to regularly clean your home and filter your air. Dust mites settle in bedding, so make sure you’re washing your sheets often. Pet dander accumulates in carpet and on upholstery. Frequent vacuuming with a HEPA filter can keep this allergen under control. Clean up food and crumbs to discourage insect infestations.
Allergies vs. Colds
The common cold is often mistaken for allergies and vice versa. The easiest way to tell the difference between the two is to monitor the duration of your symptoms. A cold will go away within a week, while allergies persist. Allergies also cause clear nasal secretions, while secretions are often discolored with a cold. Chills, aches and fever are consistent with a cold, while allergies are more likely to cause itchy eyes.
Keeping Your Air Clean
If you have allergy sufferers in your home, take extra measures to keep the air clean. Consider installing an air cleaner or UV lamp to help you maintain healthy indoor air quality. These can kill bacteria as well. As a result, they can help prevent illnesses.
