History of Fairfax, VA

Fairfax was founded in 1805 through action by Virginia’s state legislature. The community was named for Thomas Fairfax, who was given an extensive amount of land in the northern portion of the state by King Charles. The first land battle to occur during the Civil War took place at the community’s court house in 1861. Although the historic activity in the area has been extensive, the city was not independent until 1961.
