Historical

Founded in 1847, Springfield, Virginia was built around the Orange and Alexandria Railroad’s Daingerfield Station. The community quickly grew due to its proximity to the nation’s capital and as a gateway to the South. Rapid growth took place after I-95 was built, connecting the area to the Washington, D.C., Baltimore and Philadelphia metroplex. Today, the community is a comfortable mix of residential, retail and business development, with strong public education and library systems.

Demographic

According to the 2010 U.S. Census, around 31,000 people live in Springfield. Those residents live in approximately 12,500 homes, condominiums and apartments in the community. About one-third of the homes include children under the age of 18. Of those living in Springfield, about 48 percent are Caucasian, The area has a volunteer fire department as well as its own police station.

Cultural

Culture and the arts are an important part of life in Springfield. Members of the community can take classes at the McLean Community Center or the Reston Community Center. The local high schools and Fairfax Community college also offer classes in the fine and performing arts. Community and college theater groups often put on theatrical performances. During the summer months, Arts in the Parks offers a way for residents to get together and see exhibits in public spaces. Past shows have included sculpture and mixed media pieces created by residents of the town. The Fairfax County Park Authority maintains museums with important works of art, including historical memorabilia, quilts from the Civil War era and hand-woven baskets made by enslaved persons.

Events, Shopping and Museums

Several retail centers offer places for Springfield residents to go shopping or visit a restaurant. Some of the largest shopping centers in the area include the Springfield Plaza Shopping Center, West Springfield Shopping Center and Tower Shopping Center. The historic downtown area of town has many small, family-owned shops with goods such as antiques and one-of-a-kind handmade items. Families seeking a fun and educational outing may also visit one of the local museums in or around Springfield. Some of the local favorites include the Quantum Reefs, National Women’s History Museum, the U.S. Patent and Trade Museum and the Alexandria Black History Museum, which is just a few minutes outside of the Springfield city limits. People living in town often enjoy visiting some of the annual events that take place. Each year, the community holds Springfield Days, which takes place on the weekend following Memorial Day. Other popular community events include the annual Heady Winter Bowl and the NOVA Jewish Film Festival.

Geography, Climate and Weather

Springfield is situated just a few miles from the Potomac River. Alexandria, VA and Washington, D.C. are just a short drive away. The area has a humid continental climate with four distinct seasons. During the summer, the weather is hot and humid and in the winter it is cool with frequent rain, snow or mixed frozen precipitation.
