Woodridge, VA Air Conditioning Repair & Service

Historical

Founded as a town in the 1960’s, the Woodbridge, VA area has long been inhabited by some of America’s earliest settlers. The town’s name comes from a 1795 wooden tool bridge built to supplement ferry service across the Occoquan River. Until the community was planned, the area was used for plantations and farming. Two locations in Woodbridge are listed on the National Register of Historic Places, including the Freestone Point Confederate Battery and Rippon Lodge, both of which are open to the public for educational tours.

Demographic

Woodbridge is located about 20 miles south of Washington, D.C. and is a census-designated place. As part of the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area, the community is considered to be a suburban to rural area, with mixes of dense housing as well as uninhabited wildlife and nature preserves. According to the 2010 U.S. Census, the Woodbridge Magisterial District had 54,275 residents, while the smaller Woodbridge census-designated place had a population of about 4,055. The community is served by ten elementary and middle schools and seven high schools. The affordable housing and retail establishments have drawn in many young professionals, couples and families with young children.

Cultural

Due to its proximity to Washington, D.C., most of the culture and cultural events are related to the area’s importance in government and history. The current boom of growth in Woodbridge began in the 1980’s and hasn’t stopped. Most of the people who live in the community commute to Washington, D.C. and the inner suburbs. The Rippon Lodge functions as an important place of cultural and historical heritage, with a park and museum on the site. It’s also the oldest home in Prince William County.

Events, Shopping and Museums

In addition to the Rippon Lodge museum, Merrimac Farm functions as a museum and attraction. Merrimac Farm is part of the Prince William Conservation Alliance. The community is also home to several shopping centers, including the Potomac Mills Mall, Potomac Plaza Shopping Center and Potomac Festival Shopping Center. Woodbridge also has many independently owned and operated small businesses that offer handcrafts, clothing and collectibles. Many people visit Woodbridge during annual events such as the Prince William County Ducks Unlimited Annual Banquet and Conservation Fundraiser and the annual Model Train Show in nearby Manassas.

Parks and Recreation

Visitors and residents can also explore the Occoquan Bay National Wildlife Refuge, which occupies an expansive area around the Belmont Bay and Occoquan River. The Featherstone National Wildlife Refuge offers visitors the chance to see sea birds and other birds on their migration journeys. The Mason Neck State Park and Wildlife Refuge offer camping sites, playgrounds, hiking trails and more. Pohick Bay Regional Park is another popular place for residents of Woodbridge to visit. The Potomac Nationals are a minor league baseball team and the Northern Virginia Royals soccer club offers lessons, training camps and places for spectators to watch a game.
