3 Tips to Keep Spring Energy Costs Under Control
The spring season in Dumfries, Virginia, brings beautiful flowers and warmer temperatures. However, the climate can fluctuate drastically during this time of year. As a result, it’s sometimes hard to manage the temperature swings. Use these helpful tips to keep your energy costs under control without sacrificing your comfort:
Schedule an AC Tune-up
Before you switch your HVAC system to cooling for the season, schedule an air conditioning tune-up. Routine maintenance is vital to the performance and lifespan of your unit. Having it tuned up in the spring can also help ensure that all components are working properly. As a result, the system will be ready to handle the upcoming warmer temperatures and higher humidity levels.
During the service, an HVAC service technician will check the refrigerant level, test the thermostat, measure the airflow and inspect all parts. You can perform some simple DIY maintenance as well. Change the air filter in the system every 30 to 90 days. Trim back any shrubs or trees that may be growing close to the outdoor unit. Ensure that all registers and vents in your home aren’t blocked.
Update Your Thermostat Schedule
When your HVAC system is set to heat, you probably have a schedule set up that warms the indoor air when you’re home. Spring is the time to reprogram the thermostat to set up a cooling schedule. When the temperatures fluctuate, the system will automatically cycle on and off, which uses less energy than making manual adjustments. Set the thermostat to around 78 degrees to maximize comfort and minimize cooling costs.
Focus on Ventilation
Ventilation is also important to the overall atmosphere in your home. When you shower or prepare meals, use the exhaust fans to remove excess humidity and keep air moving. Ceiling fans can also help with airflow, creating a wind-chill effect that helps you feel cooler. Use these fans regularly to maintain a more comfortable atmosphere without overloading your HVAC system.
