What’s an AC SEER Rating?

The SEER, or seasonal energy efficiency ratio, lets you know how much energy an AC system uses to cool a space. This is something that you’ll want to know if you’re thinking about upgrading the AC system in your Arlington, Virginia, home. Learn more about how to interpret the SEER rating so you can shop wisely for a new air conditioner.

What SEER Ratings Tell You

The SEER rating is cooling output divided by energy consumption. This tells you the average efficiency of the system over the course of the cooling season. The number is calculated using varying outdoor temperatures from roughly 60 to 100 degrees while maintaining a consistent indoor temperature.

The SEER rating tells you how one system stacks up against another. It’s not a guarantee of how much energy your unit will consume over a season, as the actual outdoor temperatures will vary from day to day.

Which Numbers to Look For

In Virginia, air conditioners must have a minimum SEER of 13. This is the least efficient AC system you can buy. Top-of-the-line air conditioners can have a SEER as high as 25. The higher the number, the better your efficiency.

Finding the Right Pick for Your Home

When purchasing a new air conditioner, you must balance the upfront cost with your long-term savings. A unit with a higher SEER will yield lower utility bills over the course of its lifespan, which is typically around 15 years. A higher SEER minimizes your carbon footprint and gives you a more eco-friendly home. Consider your budget carefully to make the right choice for your individual situation.
